Microsoft and News Corp Teaming Up Against Google?
As you may now, I recently posted a blog entry titled News Corp to block Google and other search engines. It seems this story is coming to fruition as CNN reports Microsoft has been in contact with News Corp & Rupert Murdoch for exclusivity rights to index News Corp’s news content. In other words, Microsoft would be willing to pay News Corp to “de-index” its content from Google. in essence, denying Google users content from News Corp owned online news syndication.
This all stems from Murdoch recently stating that “Google and other search engines are stealing their news stories”. I personally find this quite ironic. I say keep it up Murdoch, you will go down in history as the man who “killed the newspaper”. It is important to understand, Google knows the future is the blogosphere. The blogosphere is a much more diverse, much more opinionated, and non-biased source of news. The mainstream media has turned into a circus in recent years. in terms of garbage political agendas, NBC and others are liberal, Fox News is extremely conservative. What is truth and what is fiction? The lines are very blurry in the main stream media nowadays. The blogosphere has filled this role with alternative views on the facts behind many stories.
The fact that Murdoch and News Corp is considering a pact with Microsoft Bing is ironic in itself. Microsoft Bing will be a failure. The sad part of it is Yahoo search right now is three times better than Bing, and I really think Yahoo would have been better off on their own. Bing will fail just like Windows Live Search failed before it. Bing still has all the problems Windows Live Search had, they just put a new interface on it. It is an inferior search search engine to Google no doubt about it. I personally don’t believe MicroHoo will help Bing, infact, it will hurt Yahoo and Microsoft more then it helps. As Bing returns so many useless results that it will just drive people to Google. Google will be smart, and will renew its search engine agreement with the Mozilla Foundation to keep Google Search in Firefox which is chipping away at Internet Explorer.
The enhanced Google Blog Search is testament to the fact that Google understands the blogosphere will have a huge role in the future in terms of how news is reported. Its the short sighted folks like Murdoch and News Corp that just don’t get it. The blogosphere has allowed a whole new form of news to get started without the need of huge capital investments in newspapers, and other high dollar investments. One also must add in the fact that a little SEO can go a long way in ranking a blog high in Google.
It will be interesting in the years to come how this all plays out. Will this model be the death of News Corp? It could very possibly hurt the entire news industry as we know it. It could also bring about big changes in the future.
