DLH:

You make a very good points. I agree that those that don't use deceptive practices and annoying ads should beable to make something. I do not however believe a person should feel obligated to view ads, if a person wishes to block them thats their choice.

The problem with ad blockers is that they don't discriminate between advertising that is respectful of the audience and the garbage that deserves to be blocked. Advertisers and publishers that respect their audiences by avoiding garish animations and deceptive tactics should be able to earn revenue (as publishers) or get their message out (as advertisers), but blanket ad blockers prevent this. It is much more fair for surfers to take their ire out on the publishers who serve up the garbage. If I get to a site with horrible ads, I exit immediately; bad publishers deserve high bounce rates. But as someone with a startup business whose ads I want to be seen, I don't feel right punishing everyone for the actions of some. Publishers and advertisers that respect their audience should be rewarded, and if they are, maybe more of them will conduct themselves appropriately.

Your welcome, and thanks for the comment. Yes it seems enticing to use such a tool, but it could get you put on Askimet or some other spam checking service blacklist. now that would be bad for your site. i say build links in a honest way and focus on getting users to your content that are interested in it. Take care.

Thanks for the info on the downside of using the deep link engine and explaining the trackback spam that this will cause...you saved me a lot of frustration in trying to undo this mess had I gone ahead with the install. like you said i found this plug in on the wordpress site and it has over 30k using it which can make it look enticing to bloggers that may be willing to ignore the warning signs just to cut some corners in trying to generate more traffic.

Thanks for the Comment.

I totally understand pingbacks, however 99% of all pingbacks and trackbacks today are nothing more then spammers and scrappers.

Why should I allow a blog I know nothing about get a free link on my web site?

Do you know Google and Bing will "penalize" your web site or blog for having too many bad links from sites they called "bad neighborhoods"?

Yes if you have links pointing to your blog from sites Google sees as spammers your site will be penalized in the rankings to some degree.

Spammers have abused the pingback and trackback functionality to the point it needs to be turned off to prevent spam. Even if trackback/pingback links are "no follow" they can still hurt you as Ask.com for example does not honor the no follow attribute.

There is more to this then meets the eye, and I would be very careful who you allow to link you, and who you link back to. This is even more true if your doing this without the nofollow attribute.

Something to keep in mind:
YOU are also getting a link when this happens - otherwise the pingback will not even register on your blog ('verification' that the link actually exists is part of the pingback process). And if links weren't so valuable, spammers wouldn't be doing it.

One of the best things I ever did was to quite worrying about pingback 'spam', and instead took the 'captialist' approach - harness the greed built-in to humans :)

I create my blog templates to list the pingbacks seperate from the comments, and I hacked the pingback code in wordpress to make sure the link on the other site does not have a 'no follow'. Then I just sit back and let the links build if/when it happens.

I also put my links (and domain) in the text of every item in my rss feeds (plenty of plugins available for this), and I don't sweat it when someone srapes my feed. I often end up with backlinks when they do (surrounded by relevant text).

I've noticed a lot of bloggers do not even understand how pingback's actually work. For instance, a lot of bloggers don't realize that their blogging software will automatically scan their blog posts for links, and will automatically do a pingback on the other site if it's a blog. Unless "Raygen" has disabled it, then his link to the deep link engine blog generated a pingback on their blog, with "deep link engine" in the anchor text. While he may understand this, I bet there are plenty of readers who do not.

Yeah I don't see ads as a decent way to make any money, and to be honest with you, internet users are getting banner blind which pretty much means they ignore ads and you gotta be really creative + have tons of trafffic to make anything from any of them. I don't even bother anymore.

Creating back links from commenting is a great tool. The best way to find these are to go an use googles operator for example: In the google search box enter the following: intext:”powered by wordpress” AND “KeywordLuv” OR “CommentLuv” this will pull out all blogs that provide the plugin and to filter out non blogs we incorporate the “powered by wordpress”

I use Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Safari and Opera. All of them work very well, and while Internet Explorer is sluggish, it still make a great browser with all of its nice features. Firefox, despite lacking some features unlike Internet Explorer, is faster, but not yet as fast Safari, which stands in the middle of the line, and it have a pretty user interface. I currently use Opera, as it is the second fastest, only a tiny bit slower than Google Chrome, and is impressive in features. I also love Google Chrome, as its features are catching up, or have already caught up with Safari, while it still performs extremely fast.

Just having a Hard time with Trackbacks and Pingbacks after an Article I wrote more Trackbacks than visitors it's a Shame that Bloggers can't use this useful communication tool that is a Trackback and only Spammers. I wonder how many people actually know how to make a trackback that are not spammers I guess they are a very small Percentage.

Yes the more Technorati favs you can get, the better your rank. This also goes along with how many blogs indexed in Technorati link to you as well.

I didn't know Technorati Media has ads. I am looking into other ad solutions on this blog so I will check them out. Thanks for the suggestion!

Wow thanks for the info, I never knew Technorati authority will increase when the blog is added in others faves. I submitted my blog to Technorati very late , just a couple of weeks back and now I have Authority of 126. BTW why don't you have Technorati Media ads , they have high pay rates for both CPC and CPM. Cheers

Your Welcome Roezer, I am glad I could help. Yes the Deep Link Engine is nothing more than a blog spam plug-in. I am going to post another article that will show you how to disable all trackbacks and pingbacks globally on your blog, even on posts you have already created with some SQL magic :)

again thanks for the comments!

Good info, all their links go to spam sites, beside that it is difficult to remove links and plugin -everything needs to be removed manually, post by post and all tables from DB

Thank you for the comment Rick. I think this type of bullying needs to stop. This is even more true with what goes on in social media being used as tools to launch it to even higher levels then what was around when we were kids. I am sorry you had to go through being bullied as a child, but I am glad you made it through and are a strong individual because of it.

i always fought back against anyone who tried to bully me regardless of the odds, but that's how I was raised to do. However, sometimes fighting back is not an option when its 8 vs 1 or 10 vs 1. That really makes it tough.

Hopefully more people will become aware of what is going on here, and I hope the blogosphere takes a lead on this and rallies behind this to educate and inform the public so we can all do what we can to protect the young ones. Life is hard enough as it is without adding anymore to it.

take care

I'm a bit behind the times on all this but I just found out about this very sad event. I was bullied at her age myself and was very depressed over it. Back then we didn't have the internet or cell phones to add to it. I was looking for someplace that I could post something for the parents to maybe help them understand. I just can't fathom the kinds of people that would continue to torture her poor parents after this happened. It's all so very sad. Those poor people need closure not what they are getting. She seemed like a really sweet person in the pictures I saw. I hope that she is happy in the arms of Jesus right now.

When wp-includes become password-protected, these plugins and themes will not work properly.

Yes I did bring up two separate arguments.

The first is not an excuse. Yes I do run widgets on this site, however My users are not forced to view them. In fact, readers are more then happy to block them if they choose to do so.

Secondly, I use BetterPrivacy + Noscript + ABP + Private Browsing mode on Linux ensures NO cookies get left behind at all when my browsing session is over. I do use cookies on this blog to see how many visitors I get, however that information is not shared with any 3rd party marketers and I don't share it as this blog is not a money making venture. User are free to delete them as they wish.

Third, How is me or any other user blocking an advertisement the same as stealing a copyrighted television show? I don't follow your logic there.

I am not distributing, selling, copying any copyrighted work. If the work if made public online sponsored by advertising it is is free to read as long as I don't copy, distribute it, or do anything that would violate IP Laws.. Am I required to look at advertisements in the newspaper?

perhaps if advertisers and site owners went to a "cost per pixel" advertising model that is a much more viable long-term solution it wouldn't be as bad. You pay a flat cost per pixel regardless of web site views. This model worked out well for a kid from England who made a Million dollars off his <a href="http://www.milliondollarhomepage.com/" rel="nofollow">Million Dollar Home page</a> at 1$ per pixel.

Thanks for commenting on my blog as well, I look forward to reading more of your stuff. Hopefully you will drop by mine as well.

You bring up two separate arguments -
1. Ads contain Javascript/flash etc. and therefore may harm your computer.
2. You just don't like being exposed to ads and commercials.

I think the first is just an excuse. You run widgets on this page and other pages run them too. Next you're going to tell me you don't use cookies? There are ways to control your security while allowing basic scripting languages and I think you're aware of them. As for the second argument, what you're doing is no different than downloading a torrent of a tv show because you want the show for free and without the commercials.

I have more to say about this - I think it's worth a post on my blog ;) Thanks for visiting my blog btw and leaving a comment :)

Under Karmic, you can install the software source (repository), GPG key and Chromium itself by entering three commands in terminal. No need to swich between graphical tools and terminal.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:chromium-daily/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install chromium-browser

Yes, It seems that the Chromium web browser does not use up as much RAM after prolonged use as Mozilla Firefox does. However, Chromium doesn't have the extensive set of browser extensions that Firefox has at this point.

its still a very worthy brownser nonetheless

thanks for the comment!

It could be my conspiratorial gene becoming dominant, but I understand that while Google offers some incredible free tools, they also have the right to all information collected from your use of said tools.

I suppose as long as they stick to their motto- 'Don't be evil'- all will be well and we can sleep safe in our beds at night. hehe

You are absolutely right. ixQuick is a good search engine and shows her 'big' brothers that it's really possible to offer a private searching session. Btw, recently ixQuick added another cool feature. An anonymous webproxy that offers you the possibility to visit your search results through their webproxy!

That is a point well taken. However, it must be noted that the way Linux is designed running anti-virus would be redundant. Linux also comes with its own firewall IPTables, Pffilter, etc take your pick. Many routers home and coporate run some form of Linux/BSD on them.

MACL and digital code signing is the future for any platform.

@Jon Ritchie I did a lot of research on this subject as well as observed other blogs doing this as well. It is well known that Google counts Dofollow comments, but most blogs are nofollow so it defeats the purpose. while it fights spam, it hurt the honest folks so i decided to go another route by doing DoFollow links + CommentLuv + Keyword Luv..I have Askimet and Recaptcha on here and moderate all comments so it is working out good so far.

Yes Marry, KDE is just much more polished overall than Gnome, and even more-so than windows Vista/7 user interface is. Amarok is probably the best music player on any platform, and kden live is much better then Windows Movie Maker. The QT vs GTK application argument has been going on for sometime, Im not sure if one set of apps are better then the others. I think that depends primarily on the users needs. Brasero and k3b are extremely closes in term of which one is better. I will say that kopete is a better IM client then Pidgin or empathy though..

Alexa Ratings can be inflated VERY easily. Alexa Booster programs have been available for a long time and can sky rocket a web pages Alexa popularity like crazy. I love the ZGoogle toolbar and it is very helpful, but page rank does not mean a website will rank higher. I could give several examples of PR 2 sites linking much higher on the SERP's than a PR 4 or a PR 5 site. Sometimes this is due to graphic or flash intro pages that have NO no onpage keyword optimization, and other times it is due to the fact that the PR was gained from not too relevant sites and google can determine this. I would much rather have 5 links from highly relevant sites with little PR, than 5 links from not relevant sites with PR3 or PR4. Thats my opinion, but it is based on years of experience.

Thats great Everything SEO. I think more people need to have their blogs as Dofollow. I think many worry too much about Google Pagerank and the Big G. Askimet does a great job filtering spam now, and I have seen a good results so far with Dofollow + CommentLuv. It encourages your readers to leave genuine comments and I think that is a plus regardless.

thanks for the comments

Good advice - I have recently set up a blog in a niche that I am very knowledgeable about (its not the one i'm linked to - thats just my playpen). The first phase of my plan is to get on page 1 of google for a long-tail keyphrase and start building a database of email addresses, with the incentive of free, useful content.

Once I have built up a sizeable list, I intend to start monetizing the site with the use of advertising and a very specialised ebook. I already have a targeted list of affiliate sites that could really benefit from the ebook as all they crappy 1-2 cent adsense ads at the moment which can't be making them much.

I recently changed my blog from nofollow to dofollow as well, though I haven't installed the keyword luv plugin yet. I don't mind giving people a free backlink if they are going to leave a useful or otherwise interesting comment. Akismet seems to have filtered out the spam comments I have had so far, and it looks as though it is serving its purpose for you too!

I myself am a recent convert from Ubuntu/gnome to Kubuntu/KDE and so far I'm very happy with the change. It feels like almost everything is on one level higher than before. The looks is awesome and even the applications are better (I love Gwenview+digiKam combination for photos, K3b is fantastic CD burning app, Kdenlive is a superb viddeo editr and Amarok is by far the best music player I've used). Not to mention the desktop itself. Damn I've never seen so powerfull stuff.. Now that I've learned about Kubuntu and KDE I can only wonder why this isn't the default *buntu distro. It would have a much better position to compete with Mac OS X (Windows is way behind already anyways).

I never really liked GOOGLE tool bar. The SEO ToolBar with website X-ray, PageRank and Rankchecker built right into the tool bar is better imo. Plenty of free stuff from that same website as well for download. Thanks for a great blog

Commentluv seems really cool. I've seen that some blogs also use Keyword luv, which allows people to use their name and add a keyword for their posts. I've wondered how it works without keywordluv. The anchor text to our website will be our name, as opposed to our Keywords. And the latest blog post that follows won't receive any benefit from google, from what I've read. In any event, I'm testing commentluv and dofollow out too. I hope to get to the bottom of those questions soon.

Commentluv is a very good incentive for readers to make comments on your blog, as for making your blog "do follow" it's true that it's all personal preference, if you can handle a few spam comments then its totally fine, you just have to be on top of your comment moderating.

Thanks for the comment James. I have heard of Linux Mint, but I haven't tried it yet. I wonder if Mint has better support for KDE than Ubuntu does? Afterall it seems Ubuntu and Gnome is where the lion share of the attention is on Ubuntu, and many say Kubuntu is like the neglected little sister

Nice article. I agree KDE looks much more polished than Gnome. Hopefully with initiatives like Project Timelord, Kubuntu will continue to step out of the shadows and shine. If not, I predict that another Debian based distro will.

When Linux Mint 8 KDE comes out in a few weeks, you should give that a try also.

I agree with both the article and comments. Bing is a disaster for webmasters and the more Microsoft denies it has created a technological joke, the further irrelevant they become. I have given a lot of money to Microsoft over the years for servers, databases, operating systems and development software. I will not give Microsoft any more money than I need to and have started migrating to open source software for some servers and databases. When 'bing' issues are brought to the attention of Microsoft support, their answers are insulting as they blame webmasters and insinuate they have a lack of technical knowledge, when most people asking the questions have been doing development work longer than they have been around. In short they are in total denial that they developed a failed project.

Well I appreciate your comments. Its good to get a dmoz editor to speak on my blog. I do not believe ALL editors at dmoz are corrupt, but there are always a few bad apples in everything. I do however appreciate your honestly and integrity for speaking your mind here. The term "high quality" is extremely vague term, what one considers high quality another may consider garbage. i have seen no real logical pattern in some of the categries that dmoz excepts sites.

for example, I have seen many sites in dmoz categories that are MFA sites, and are quite literally spam. i have seen many sites with no ads at all and good content get rejected. It makes no sense. I would really like to see some clear and concise definitions for such broad terms. I would also like to see dmoz be much more open and transparent in its goals. why is everything handled behind closed oors in secret with a big hush behind it? secrecy seems paramount in the ODP, and that is very disheartening in my opinion.

again, thanks for your comments.

Your comments perhaps are true that the directory is made to be more important than it is.
But the suggestion that editors prevent competitor listings, at least in many cases, is not.
I am a dmoz editor and I have added many competitor sites. I consider my role as an editor separate - like putting on a new hate. My job as an editor is to list the high quality web sites.
That does unfortunately lead to a lot of angst out there against dmoz, because frankly, 99% percent of the submissions are not good quality. They have missing huge gaps of content, spam ridden etc.

Hard to believe a crook like Kevin Trudeau is allows to operate on the airways. And the male enhancement? Looks like some NASCAR guy is pushing the crap now. I believe America's collective intellect has taken a nosedive in the last 8 years. I hope the present administration will fund some additional consumer protection. This carp would not have been allowed in the pre-Reagan years. There used to be much more protection until everything was de-regulated. My personal favorite is the colon cleanse guy. He even looks like a con artist. I suppose stupid people deserve to be taken, but I would rather see them protected from spending their hard earned cash on worthless products.

Agreed Bing does suck but it is all down to the stupidity of their indexing, and it isn't targeted at blogs alone, it’s everyone.

Bing have taken the root that in order to get listed your domain name needs to be around a while, so new websites are in trouble, and you must already have in place loads of back links, hundreds in fact. They will however list your main index page regardless; well at least that is supposed to be the plan. You can follow their guidelines to a tee and take onboard the advice of their staff but it doesn’t help.

Adding new pages to your site and getting those indexed is just as painful an experience as again they expect each page to have tonnes of back links in place even though they are new pages.

They’re acting as if they are the biggest kid on the block but they are pretty insignificant at the moment and this is growing worse as they alienate website owners – if you can’t even get listed then you’re even less likely to use it or recommend it to others.

Their current indexing policy is a joke and is backfiring on them, but they are making excuses for it. Eventually someone at Microsoft may see the stupidity of their indexing policy and the serious damage it is doing to the reputation of Bing and do something about it – or maybe they are just making excuses for it whilst they sort out all the problems. In any case Microsoft will do well to remember that you only get one chance to make a first impression.

As for me I’m on Bing, although my new pages haven’t made it yet, so I’m sticking with dependable Google. Traffic from Bing is so small that it isn’t currently worth the hassle, as long as I do what Google requires Bing will eventually include my new pages.

Yes I have noticed that Bing hates blogs too. Mine disappeared for awhile, but is now back. Although less than half my blog is indexed now. That really sucks.

Yes it is possible, but it takes a lot of work, effort, and good ad placement to achieve it. It also strongly depends on your web site or blogs niche as well.
